  Clowns

Baseball card for a AAA baseball team, promoting a Home Run Derby benefiting the Negro League Players Association.

Client: Scranton / Wilkes-Barre
Red Barons (AAA Baseball)
Art Buyer: Dean Mullaney

Watercolor on paper

Problem:
A baseball card promotion for the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, part of a pre-game Home Run Derby benefiting the Negro League Players Association.

Solution:
This is a portrait of Armando Vazquez, the famous 2nd baseman for The Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues.

A straightforward portrait, but one of my favorites. Recently, I traded it to Murray Tinkelman, the nationally known illustrator and Illustration Dept. Chair at Syracuse University, who has created a permanent travelling show of baseball illustrations created by contemporary illustrators. The rental proceeds for the show benefit The Special Olympics.
