One of the common misperceptions about artists and art, is that we know what we're doing. I think most people will be surprised to know that the familiar feeling of panicked ineptitude they feel when they draw is also common to most artists.
This painting was just looking terrible after 2 hours of work. The last 1/2 hour, with nothing to lose and acting out of desperation, I started attacking the thing...and immediately improved it 200%.
