Alpine Meadow

Oil on Panel

Painted south of Lake Tahoe, I think this is one of my most successful plein-air paintings to date, and it's ironic, because it was also the most miserable.

I had decided to play it safe and wear sunscreen, something I rarely do, and something in the lotion attracted every fly, bug, and mosquito in a large radius.

On top of all that, once the painting started going well, I didn't want to stop, and I had to endure the bugs for about three and a half hours. I don't know that I've ever been happier to finish a painting.
